If you’ve ever bought a flashlight and then discovered it eats batteries like candy, you know the pain. The battery is half the flashlight, honestly. The downside: you need a dedicated charger (or a light with built-in USB charging), and you should buy from reputable brands. Cheap 18650s are often fake or underpowered. Trust me, a “9000mAh” 18650 for three dollars is not a real 9000mAh battery.
21700: the newer, bigger brother
The 21700 is the 18650’s bigger cousin. Slightly wider and longer, but it holds significantly more energy. It’s the battery of choice for high-output modern flashlights, the ones pushing 3000+ lumens, because it can deliver the current those lights need without sagging.
If you want maximum brightness and battery life in one package, 21700 is where it’s at. The tradeoff: bigger lights, slightly heavier, and you need a light designed for the cell.
Which should you pick?
Match the battery to the light’s job:
Everyday carry, moderate use: 18650. It’s the sweet spot of size, power, and availability. Most good EDC lights use it.
Max performance, long runtime: 21700. If you’re buying a serious outdoor or tactical light, go 21700. The extra capacity is worth the size.
Emergency/backup, never know where you’ll be: AA. Accept the lower performance, enjoy the universal availability.
