Most people think of blacklights as party decorations. Strobe them at a glow party, watch the neon stuff light up, call it a day. But a proper UV flashlight is one of the most underrated tools you can own. Once you start carrying one, you’ll find uses for it constantly.

1. Finding pet stains
This is the big one. If you have a dog or cat, your carpet has stains you can’t see. Urine glows under UV light, old stains that have long since dried and disappeared to the naked eye light up like a landing strip. You’ll be horrified by what you find in the first five minutes, and then you’ll finally be able to clean the spots that have been stinking up the room for months.

2. Hotel room checks
Before you unpack in any hotel room, do a quick sweep of the mattress seams, headboard, and corners with a UV light. Bed bugs leave behind tiny dark specks that are hard to see normally but stand out under UV. It takes sixty seconds and it’s the best travel habit I’ve ever picked up.
3. Checking currency and documents
Most modern bills have UV-reactive security threads. Same with passports, IDs, and some credit cards. One quick pass tells you if that $100 bill you got at a garage sale is real or a very good fake. It’s not a perfect counterfeit detector, but it catches the common stuff.
4. Finding scorpions (yes, really)
In the southwestern US and anywhere scorpions live, a UV light at night makes them glow a bright blue-green. If you live in scorpion country or camp in it, this is how you find them before they find you. Campers in Arizona and Texas swear by this trick.
5. Checking for cracks and leaks
Some coolants and refrigerants contain UV dye. If your car is leaking something, a UV light can help you trace the trail. HVAC techs use this constantly. Even at home, certain adhesives and sealants glow, so you can spot old repair lines and leaks that are otherwise invisible.
6. Inspecting your laundry and surfaces
Gross but useful: some biological residues (think dried sweat on clothes that didn’t quite get clean, or spots in the bathroom) show up under UV. It’s not glamorous, but if you’re a germ-conscious person, a UV flashlight is basically a truth serum for cleanliness.
7. Fun with glow stuff
Look, some of the uses are just fun. Glow-in-the-dark toys, stamps on your hand at a festival, mineral hunting at night. Calcite and a few other rocks glow beautifully under UV. It’s a great way to make a boring camping night more interesting for the kids.
A note on UV safety
Keep the beam away from eyes. Don’t stare into it. UV exposure adds up over time, so use it in short bursts and don’t shine it at people’s faces for fun. A 365nm light is gentler and better for indoor use than the harsher 395nm ones, which is worth knowing when you shop.
